Compare REFLECTLENS® Equinox and Lunar Eclipse prism filters: mirrored symmetry vs half-kaleidoscope effects. Find out which fits your creative style.
Quick Answer
Choose Equinox if you want clean mirrored symmetry that keeps your subject intact; choose Lunar Eclipse if you prefer an asymmetrical split between clear and kaleidoscope distortion for more chaotic, creative frames.
Understanding the Core Difference
Both filters mount on your lens and use the RFL Infinity Ring™ for endless rotation, but they deliver opposite visual philosophies. Equinox is built for symmetry: a central clear lens with two angled side elements duplicates the frame in a perfectly mirrored way while keeping the subject sharp. Lunar Eclipse takes an asymmetrical approach, with one side clear and the other a half-kaleidoscope that multiplies the image into fragmented patterns.
The practical impact is immediate. With Equinox, you get a balanced, predictable effect that works well for portraits and architecture where you want the subject to remain recognizable. Lunar Eclipse introduces more chaos and contrast, ideal for abstract shots where you're willing to let the distortion dominate part of the frame.
Rotation and Positioning
Both filters feature the RFL Infinity Ring™, which spins endlessly after mounting. This means you can fine-tune the angle of the effect without stopping to reposition the filter. However, the way rotation changes the image differs: Equinox's mirrored symmetry stays balanced as you rotate, while Lunar Eclipse's half-kaleidoscope shifts the boundary between clear and distorted zones, giving you dynamic control over how much chaos enters the frame.
For video creators, this rotation capability is a bonus—you can create subtle shifts in the effect during a shot. For stills, it lets you experiment with multiple compositions quickly without swapping filters.
Trade-Offs at a Glance
- Effect Type: Equinox gives you mirrored symmetry; Lunar Eclipse gives you a half-kaleidoscope split. Choose based on whether you want balance or chaos.
- Subject Clarity: Equinox keeps the subject intact through its central clear lens; Lunar Eclipse may obscure part of the subject with distortion. If you need a recognizable subject, Equinox is safer. For portraits, prioritize Equinox; for abstract shots, Lunar Eclipse offers more creative freedom.
- Creative Versatility: Lunar Eclipse's asymmetrical design allows you to control the boundary between clear and distorted zones through rotation, offering more experimental range. Equinox's symmetry is more predictable but less surprising. If you want to push boundaries, Lunar Eclipse gives you more room to play; if you want consistent results, Equinox is more reliable.
Filter Facts
- Lunar Eclipse: Half-kaleidoscope filter with one side built for creative image multiplication and the other left completely clear. This asymmetrical design lets you split the frame between distortion and purity, creating striking contrast for abstract and experimental shots.
Lunar Eclipse - Equinox: Creative symmetry filter that duplicates the frame in a perfectly mirrored way, with a central clear lens and two angled side elements. The mirrored duplication keeps your subject intact while reshaping the scene, making it ideal for portraits and architecture where clarity matters.
