Learn how to use the Gravity Wave prism filter for dreamy, in-camera effects. Get practical tips for portraits, abstracts, and more without post-processing.
Quick answer
The Gravity Wave prism filter lets you add flowing, rippled-glass distortions to your photos entirely in-camera, without any post-processing. Use it to transform ordinary scenes into dreamy, otherworldly images.
Why choose a physical filter over digital effects
Digital filters can look generic and take time to apply. The Gravity Wave filter gives you a unique, organic distortion that moves with your subject in real time, saving editing time and adding a natural, unpredictable quality.
When the Gravity Wave effect may not suit your style
If you need sharp, distortion-free images for commercial product shots or crisp landscapes, this filter's rippled effect will soften details. It's best for portraits, abstracts, or editorial work where a dreamy look is intentional.
Diagnosis: Getting the most from your Gravity Wave filter
- Symptom: Your photos look flat or too sharp for the mood you want.
- Likely cause: You're relying on standard lenses without any in-camera texture effect.
- Corrective action: Attach the Gravity Wave filter to your lens and rotate it to adjust the wave pattern. Shoot wide open for maximum blur or stop down slightly for more defined ripples. Experiment with different angles and distances from your subject to control the intensity of the distortion.
- When to stop or choose another option: If you need pinpoint sharpness for product or landscape photography, skip this filter and use a clear UV filter instead. The Gravity Wave effect is best for creative, not technical, shots.
